VIAA, born Mia Coleman, is an American woman in every sense of the word. Born of a mixed-race marriage, VIAA spent the first 9 years of her life as an Army brat in Germany, relocating to Ohio. There she would dive deeper into singing and decided at 17 that there was no other career option. Music is in VIAA’s blood, as a child her father was in a traveling church band that would help keep young black kids off the street in North Carolina. Years later, VIAA would follow in her father’s footsteps as a singer and advocate for community building.
Since moving to LA at the age of 21, VIAA has come into herself as a woman. Learning quickly how disposable women in the music industry can be and deciding that standing up for herself and other women would become a core value in the pursuit of her craft. A non-negotiable. VIAA found that creating a community of likeminded women in music was a major key to survival in a town that is known for ripping a woman's confidence to shreds.
VIAA’s honey like vocals and sparkling demeanor have landed her on the musical teams of artists such as Anderson Paak, Willow Smith + Doja Cat. While some would consider singing back up for artists of this caliber as a major accomplishment, VIAA is just getting started. Pulling inspiration from artists she admires like Sade, Dev Hynes + Fleetwood Mac, VIAA has been deep in the throes of creating her own musical sound with producer + collaborator Yeti Beats. VIAA’s sound rolls off your body like cool water on a hot Summer day. Her forthcoming EP feels like a road trip in SoCal, top down, music blaring. It’s fun, poignant and speaks of a woman’s coming of age in a place where she is making her dreams a reality.
LA has become the canvas for VIAA’s next adventure and her music is proof. VIAA will release her first official single entitled “Lie” on July 28th via STEM distribution. She is hoping that her music serves as a vehicle to show that women aren't just on this earth for another person's entertainment. Women are interesting, intelligent, sexy, wise, brave, bossy, nurturing while having the ability to entertain. In our current political climate, it’s important that creators are pushing a narrative that will create a wave of change and VIAA is here to do just that.
VIAA has been featured on NYLON, Saint Heron, Jezebel and other publications.
